Question
Given Information: Two blocks, A & B, are attached to each other via a cable. They are then slung over a pulley while Block A of 150 N is resting on a horizontal frictionless surface and Block B is hanging. See diagram. The system is released from rest. (a) If Block B has a mass of 12 kg, then calculate the acceleration of Block A. (b) What is the tension in the cable? (c) How long does it take Block A to move 24 cm? Using the same Given Information, do the following: (c) If Block A has a velocity of 4.6 m/s after it has moved 140 cm, then calculate the acceleration of the blocks. (d) What is the tension in the cable? (e) What is the mass of Block B?
Explanation / Answer
(A) mA = 150 /9.8 = 15.3 kg
Applying Fnet = m a on block B,
12g - T = 12 a
on A. T = 15.3 a
from these two equation,
a = (12g) /(12 + 15.3) = 4.3 m/s^2 ...Ans
(B) T = 15.3 a = 65.9 N
(C) vf^2 - vi^2 = 2 a d
(4.6 m/s)^2 - 0^2 = 2(a) (1.40 m)
a = 7.56 m/s^2
(D) mB g - mB a = 15.3 a
mB (9.8 - 7.56) = 15.3 x 7.56
mB = 51.6 kg ....Ans
