Question

Data Analysis Graphs: (1) The total weight of the washers (Mg) (y-axis) versus the period (T) (x-axis). Describe the relationship between Mg and T based on this graph. Is it liner? Explain. (2) Plot Mg (y-axis) versus 1/T2 (x-axis). Describe the relationship between Mg and T based on this graph. Is it linear? Explain. (3) Plot mv'/r (y-axis) versus the total weight of the washers (Mg) (x-axis). Describe the relationship between mv/r and Mg. Is it liner? Explain. Summary: (a) Describe what you observed (felt) when you added more washers. Did you have to rotate the rubber stopper faster in order to maintain the rotational motion? Explain using the physics terms including the centripetal force (acceleration) and the speed of rubber stopper. (b) What is the cause of the rotation in this experiment? Explain in terms of centripetal force.

Explanation / Answer

1) As the time period T increses, the weight mg is found to drop down steeply as shown in the curve. At about 0.5 s, the weight is 1.13 N which decreases to 0.48N at 0.85s

2) Contrarily, as 1/T2 increases, the weight increases. At 4.34s-2 ~ 0.5s, the weight is 1.13N. The curve is linear.

3) As the weight increases, mv2/r also increases rapidly. It is a linear increases of mv2/r with respect to the weights in N.
