Homework Activity Guide 22 6. Examine the circuit shown on the right. 10 a. Assume that the switch is open State which bulbs or combination ries and which are arranged in parallel. b. Assume that the switch is closed. State which bulbs or combination of bulbs in the circuit are arranged in series and which are arranged in parallel. Examine the circuit shown on the right. Assume that the switch is open. Rank the bulbs according to brightness and explain your reasoning. c. @Bce @n Assume that the switch is closed Rank the bulbs according to brightness and explain your reasoning. d.Explanation / Answer
a)When the switch is open, the bulbs c and d are in parallel, as you can see in the figure. let the resultant of c and d be Bcd. Now this Bcd is in series with bulb Bb. Now the resultant of Bb and Bcd be Bbcd. This Bbcd is in parallel with bulb A as seen in the figure.
b)When the switch is closed, no current flows through c and d since, the switch offers a path of least resistance. Hence there are only two working bulbs in the circuit which are B and A. Now this bulb B and bulb A are in parallel with each other as can be seen in the figure. Hence A and B are in parallel with each other.
c)When the switch is open, the entire current drawn from the battery goes through A and hence A glows the brightest. Also since B, C and D are in parallel with each other, equal amount of current flows through them, hence they glow equally bright.
d)when the switch is closed, no current flows through B, C and D as the switch provides a path of least resistance. hence bulb B, C and D do not glow. And Current flows thorugh A, hence it glows the brightest.
