Question
Answer all parts of the problem.
Please explain legibly step by step how you solved this problem.
A coffee maker is rated at 1170 W, a toaster at 1090 W, and a waffle maker at 1370 W. The three appliances are connected in parallel to a common 120 V household circuit. (a) What is the current in each appliance when operating independently? coffee maker toaster waffle maker (b) What total current is delivered to the appliances when all are operating simultaneously? (c) Is a 15-A dircuit breaker sufficient in this situation? Explain.Explanation / Answer
the relation between power, voltage and current is
P= VI
I = P/V
I_Coffe maker = 1170/120 = 9.75 A
I_toaster = 1090/120 = 9.08 A
I_wafle = 1370/120 = 11.41 A
(b)
Rc= P/I_Coffe maker^2 = 1170/(9.75)^2 = 12.3 ohm
Rt= 1090/(9.08)^2 = 13.22 ohm
Rw = 1370/(11.41)^2 = 10.52 ohm
1/R = 1/Rc+1/Rt + 1/Rw
1/R = 1/12.3+ 1/13.22 +1/10.52
R = 3.96 ohm
I = V/R = 120/3.96 = 30.23 A
(c)
No. The total current required exceeds the limit of the circuit breaker, so they cannot be
operated simultaneously. In fact, with a 15 A limit, no two of these appliances could be
operated at the same time without tripping the breaker.
