Three concentric conducting spherical shells are arranged as shown below. A point charge q is piaced at the center. Assume that the inner shell has net charge +24; the middle shell has net charge-3 and the outer shell has net charge +4q. Show (draw) on the diagram the charges that reside on each surface of each conductor.

Explanation / Answer

The point charge q induced a charge of -q in the inner wall of the smallest sphere. As a result of which +3q charge is induced in the outer wall of the smallest sphere so that the total charge on the smallest sphere is +2q.

Now, this +3q on the outer wall of the smallest charge induces -3q charge on the inner wall of the middle sphere as a result of which there is 0q charge on the outer wall of the sphere so that the total charge on the sphere is -3q.

Hence, as a result of which there is 0 charge induced in the lower wall of the largest sphere and +4q charge is induced on the outer wall of the largest sphere.
