Question

Question 2 5 pts Batman is shooting bat-shells onto the top of a cliff as shown below. The shells leave the bat-cannon with a speed of 48.0 m/s and aimed in a direction = 68 degrees from the horizontal as shown. The length of the bat-cannon is L 3.0 m long. The height of the cliff is h = 10.26 m from the bottom of the bat-cannon What is the horizontal distance from the bottom of the bat-cannon, D, where the shells land? (Neglect air resistance in this problem.) Give your answers in meters and to three significant figures. You are not graded on the number of significant digits, this is only so you won't be counted off due to rounding. Note: All distances are measured from the BASE of the bat-cannon. The initial speed and angle above are when the bat-shells leave the other end of the bat-cannon.

Explanation / Answer

In vertical,

yf - yi = v0y t + ay t^2 / 2

h - Lsin68 = (48 sin68)t - 9.8 t^2 /2

4.9 t^2 - 44.5t + 7.48 = 0

t = 8.91 sec

In horizontal,

D - L cos68 = (48 cos68)t

D = (3 cos68) + (48 cos68)(8.91)

D = 161.3 m .....Ans
