Question

9. A cross-section of equipotential surfaces is shown. The lines contain the given points along their electric potentials are as follows: a (100 volts), b (60 volts), c& d (-40 volts). Determine /calculate the following: a) The magnitude of the Electric Field along the regions be, where distance be is 2 cm. b) The work (in eV) required to move a proton from point d to a: c) The work (in eV) required to move an electron from point b to a d) The work (in eV) required to move an electron from point c to d:

Explanation / Answer

9. from the given figure

Va = 100 V

Vb = 60 V

Vc = -40 V = Vd

a. hence, Ebc = (Vc - Vb)/BC = (-40 - 60)/0.02 = -5000 V/m

b. Work, from d to A = q(Va - Vd)

q = 1.6*10^-19 C

W = 1.6*10^-19(100 + 40) = 224*10^-19 J

in eV

W = 100 + 40 = 140 eV

c. similiarly

from b to a

work in eV = Va - Vb = 40 eV

d. from c to d

work = Vd - Vc = 0 eV
