Question

ere x-axis is horizontal, parallel to the short edge of the page, y-axis is vertical, parallel to the long edge of the page. For the following situations (v=106m/s, B=1mT, IqI=10mC, length= 1m), find the magnitude and the direction of magnetic force on both, positive and negative q. 1. B is into the page, velocity makes an angle 40°counterclockwithe with respect to positive x-axis. 2. v is into the page, B makes an angle 40°counterclockwithe with respect to positive x-axis. 3. B is out of the page, velocity makes an angle 40°counterclockwithe with respect to positive y- axis. 4. B is up (parallel to y-axis) , velocity makes an angle 40°counterclockwithe with respect to positive x-axis.

Explanation / Answer

1. Magnetic force F=BqV Sin

B=1mT

V=106 m/s

q=10mC

In all 3 cases B and V are perpendicular to each other.

So F=BqV Sin90

=> F=10 N

To find direction of force use fleming left hand rule.

4)F=BqV Sin(90-40)

F=7.66 N

Direction of force for positive charge is out if page.

For negative charge into plane.
