Assume that the mass of the concentrated at its end so that linear momentum is conserved during this collision Number 0.0147 Correct 0

Explanation / Answer

Given,

Mm = 0.0285 kg ; Mp = 0.25 kg ; u1 = 5.25 m/s

from conservation of momentum

Pi = Pf

m1u1 + m1u2 = (m1 + m2)vf

vf = (m1u1 + m2u2)/(m1 + m2)

vf = (0.0285 x 5.25 + 0.25 x 0)/(0.0285 + 0.25) = 0.527 m/s

from conservation of energy

1/2 mv^2 = m g h

h = v^2/2g = vf^2/2g = 0.527^2/2 x 9.81 = 0.0142 m

Hence, h = 0.0142 m = 1.42 cm
