Question

13. What is the instantancous magnetic force experienced by a helium nucleus (an alpha particle) that is moving upward (ty or j) at a velocity of 8.0 x 10 m/s in a magnetic field of strength 4.0 x 104 T, directed into the page (-z or -k)? Be sure to indicate both magnitude and direction of the force. What is the corresponding alpha part particle; you can determine these parameters since you know that an essentially a nucleus containing 2 protons and 2 neutrons.) acceleration for the cle. (For this problem you need to know the charge and mass of the alpha alpha particle is Force - Acceleration-

Explanation / Answer

charge of alpha aprticle = q = 3.2*10^-19 C

mass of alpha particle = m = 6.64 10-27 kg

So, force on the moving alpha particle is F= charge* velocity * field = q*v*B = 3.2*10^-19 * 8000 * 4*10^-4 = 1*10^-18 N

Direction is given by right thumb rule; the velocity is upwards on the plane, field is into the plane, so the force is leftwards on the plane, or, along -x or -i.

Now, acceleration of alpha particle due to this force is F/m = 1*10^-18 N/ 6.64 10-27 kg = 1.5*10^8 m/s^2
