Question
INITIAL: FINAL As A white billiard ball with mass my 1.6 kg is moving directly to the right with a speed of v - 2.99 m/s and collides elastically with a black billiard ball with the same mass mb 1.6 kg that is initially at rest. The two collide elastically the white ball ends up moving at an angle above the horizontal of e-48, and the black ball ends up moving at an angle below the horizontal of b-42" 1) What is the final speed of the white ball? m/s Submit You currently have 3 submissions for this question. Only 10 submission are allowed. You can make 9 more submissions for this question. 3) What is the magnitude of the final total momentum of the system? kg-m/s SubmitExplanation / Answer
1st question
momentum is conserved
but all masses are the same so they cancel
leaving velocity vectors
a diagram will show a right triangle
with Vw and Vb as sides and the initial Vo as hypotenuse
and we know Vo = 2.99 m/s
so
A
Vw = 2.99 cos48 = 2.00 m/s
B
Vb = 2.99 cos42 = 2.22 m/s
C
final momentum = original momentum = m Vo = 1.6 kg * 2.99 m/s = 4.78 kg*m/s
D
because the collision is elastic
energy is also conserved
so initial E = final E
E = 1/2 m v^2 = 1/2 (1.6) (2.99^2) = 7.15 J
