Question

An amusement park ride consists of a car moving in a vertical circle on the end of a rigid boom of negligible mass. The combined weight of the car and riders is 5.3 kN, and the circle's radius is 13 m. (a) At the top of the circle, what are the magnitude Fa and direction (up or down) of the force on the car from the boom if the car's speed is v - 4.0 m/s magnitude direction Sel KN - (b) At the top of the circle, what are the magnitude Fa and direction (up or down) of the force on the car from the boom if the car's speed is v-14 m/s? magnitude direction !--Select-, KN Additional Materials Section 6.3

Explanation / Answer

here,

combined weight , W = 5.3 KN = 5300 N

mass , m = 540.2 kg

radius ,r = 13 m

a)

v = 4 m/s

as v^2 /r < g

then the car will loose contact at the Top

the magnitude of force on the car from the boom is zero

b)

v = 14 m/s

the magnitude of force on the car from the boom , Fb = m * ( v^2 /r - g)

Fb = 540.2 * ( 14^2 /13 - 9.81) N

Fb = 2845.2 N = 2.8 KN

the direction of force is downwards
