Question

Make connections among the Earth’s Energy Budget, the Habitable Zone and the Vital Signs of Planet Earth by discussing what you think the impact on planet Earth would be for each of these three conditions if each condition was sustained for a significant amount of time :

i. The heat gained by the Earth through solar radiation equals the heat lost through thermal radiation.

ii. The heat gained by the Earth through solar radiation is less than the heat lost through thermal radiation.

iii. The heat gained by the Earth through solar radiation is more than the heat lost through thermal radiation.

Explanation / Answer

Earth's energy budget accounts for how much energy comes into the earth climate system and how much energy is lost to space

When incoming solar energy is equal to amount of energy flow of heat to space . This state is known as radiative equilibrium and global temperatures stablize

If inflow is less than outflow then it will cause energy imbalance result in extra energy added to or lost by the planet, if inflow is more will cause green house gases.

If inflow is less will cause more accumulation of ice on the planet and will make live difficult to survive on the planet.
