Question

Calculate the electric potential at the origin O due to the point charges in the figure below.

When I got it wrong the program told me this as a clue: "Four charges are placed in the xy-plane: charge A (qA = 10 106 C) is located at x = 2 102 m, y = 0; charge B (qB = 20 106 C) is located at x = +5 102 m, y = 0;charge C (qC = 18 106 C) is located at x = 2 102 m, y = 2 102 m; and charge D (qD = 15 106 C) is located at x = 0, y = 3 102 m. The electric potential at the origin is equal to the sum of the potential due to each charge at that point."

Explanation / Answer

The electric potential at the origin is equal to the sum of the potential due to each charge at that point

So we need to calculaate the electric field due to each of the point charges and let us make the sum of it.

So  The cahrge at the pont A,qA = 10 106 C is located at x = 2 102 m, y =0

B,qB = 20 106 C is located at x = +5 102 m, y = 0

C,qC = 18 106 C is located at x = 2 102 m, y = 2 102 m

D,qD = 15 106 C is located at x = 0, y = 3 102 m

SO Ex=k*(q1/r12+q2/r22+q3/r32+q4/r42)

Ex=k*10-6/10-4(10/4-20/25+18/4)=9*109*10-6/10-4(2.5-0.8+4.5)=5.58*108 N/C

Ey=k*10-6/10-4(-2/4-15/9)=1.95*108 N/C
