Question

Today I have to do a lab practical for my AP Physics course. I have no idea how to go about it. This is the setup:

We are given a spring and told that we must figure out how to drop the spring with a mass on it, so that it stretches and barely touches an egge sitting upright underneath it. IE "kiss the egg". Essentially we have to figure out the maximum stretch of the spring.

I know the first step would be to solve for k using f=mg and f=kx. I can do that much.

How do I go about the rest?

Thanks!

Explanation / Answer

We have realtion

Force F= mg (weight of the object that is weight of egg and spring togather )

also for spring

F=Kx (where K is sprign constant and x is stretch)

also we know that if object is dropped from height H then

Potential energy at that Height = spring energy

mgH= 1/2Kx2

or

KxH=1/2Kx2   (Kx=mg)

x=2H unit. ANS
