Question
The particles in the nucleus of an atom are approximately 1.00 x10^-15 m apart, while the elctrons in an atom are about 1.00 x10^-10 m from the nucleus. Calculate the electrical repulsion between two protons ina nucleus if they are 1.00x10^ -15 m apart. How many pounds would the force be? If you were hiding these protons, do you think you could feel the effect of this force?Calculate the electrical attraction that a proton in a nucleus exerts on an orbiting electron if the two particles are 1.34 x10^ -10 m apart.If you were hiding the electron, do you think you could feel the effect on this force?
Explanation / Answer
electrical force = K*q1*q1/(r^2)
q1, q2 are charges,
r is distance between charges and K is universal constant.
Charge on proton = +1.6 *10^-19
Charge on electron = -1.6 *10^-19
force between two proton,
F = 9*10^9 * (1.6 *10^-19)^2 /(10^-15)^2
F = 230.4 N
force in pounds will be = 51.70
Force is between like charges so they will repel each other, and yes you will feel the force if you hold them in your hands.
Force between proton and electron,
F = 9*10^9 * (1.6 *10^-19)^2 /(10^-10)^2
F = 2.3 * 10^-8 N
This force is very low and is attractive in nature, you wont feel it while holding in hands as the magnitude is quite low.
