Question
In a pairs skating competition, a 75-Kg male skater moving at 4.0 m/s collides (gently) with his stationary, 50-kg female partner and raises her in a litt. Neither of them makes a horizontal push at the instant of the pickup. What is the speed of the pair after the collision? ( The vertical motion of the female has no bearing on the question.) A girl wearing ice skates stands in a skating rink and throws her backpack to a bench just off the ice. (a) If her skates are aligned parallel to the direction of the throw, what happens to her as a result? (b) When the backpack lands on the bench, it stops. Does the skater stop at the same instant? If not, where does the momentum of the skater-backpack system go? A cart moving on a low-friction track has a momentum of 6 kg middot m/s to the right. At the end of the track is a wall. what is the momentum of the system that consists of theExplanation / Answer
Conservation of momentum of girl and backpack :
when the girl throws the backpack, She will be pushed away from the bench. When backpack lands on the bench, there is an impulse on the backpack and it stops No such impulse acted on the girl and she continues to move
Considering girl + backpack as the system : Initial mometum is zero When backpack is thrown they have positive and negative momenta which add up to zero. Impulse from bench acted on the system. One part has come to rest. But the other part (girl) continues with the same momentum. Momentum of girl is exactly equal to impulse due to bench.
