Question

The cliff divers of Acapulco push off horizontally from rock platforms about h = 38 m above the water, but they must clear rocky outcrops at water level that extend out into the water L = 5.3 m from the base of the cliff directly under their launch point (Figure 1) .

Part A

What minimum pushoff speed is necessary to clear the rocks?

Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Explanation / Answer

Given,

h = 38 m ; L = 5.3 m

B) Let "t" be the time for which they are in air.

We know from the equation of motion that,

S = ut + 1/2 a t2

In our case, S = -h = -38 m ; u = 0 ; a = -g and t =?

-38 = -1/2 x 9.8 x t2

t = 2.78 sec

Hence, t = 2.78 sec.

B) Let v be the speed required.

speed required = horizontal distance/time

v = 5.3/2.78 = 1.91 m/s

Hence, v = 1.91 m/s.
