Question
A closed end manometer (as shown in the figure below) is used to measure the pressure in a water pipe. The main operating fluid in the manometer is mercury capped with carbon tetrachloride. Unfortunately, however, mixing in the manometer occurred due to a loss of pressurization in the water main, resulting in water in the closed arm and making the existing calibration inaccurate. A schematic of the resulting manometer is shown below. Determine the current operating pressure in the water pipe. Report your answer in both psia and psig.
Pipeline 14 cm water 12 cm water 120 cm mercury carbon tetrachloride 10. cmExplanation / Answer
Let the pressure in the water pipe be P
Since pressure in both end of U tube sgould be equal
Pcarbon tetrachloride + Pwater + P =Pmercury + Pwater
Hence P=Pmercury + Pwater -(Pcarbon tetrachloride + Pwater )
P=13.69*g*130+1*g*12- 1.59*g*10- 1*g*146
P= 1629.8g=1598287.8 barye= 23.1812psi=8.485256psig
