Question
A standard gold bar has dimensions of roughly 0.15 m × 0.1 m × 0.05 m, and the density of gold is 19300 kg/m3. The cost of gold is about $37000 per kilogram.
(a) Find the mass of a bar of gold (show your work).
(b) The mass of a $100 bill is one gram (0.001 kg).
Would you rather receive a gift of 1 kg of dollar bills or 1 kg of gold? Show your work.
(c) The density of paper is only slightly less than that of water, about 950 kg/m3. Would you rather receive a gift of 1 cubic meter of $100 bills or 1 cubic meter of gold? Show your work.
Explanation / Answer
(a) the mass of a bar of gold = the density of gold * volume of gold bar
= 19300 kg/m3. * 0.15 m × 0.1 m × 0.05 m
= 144.75 kg
(b) mass of a $100 bill is one gram
so 1 kg of dollar bills will cost = $100 × 1000 g
= $100000
so cost of 1 kg of gold = $37000
since cost of 1kg dollar bills are comparitively more than the cost of 1kg gold
I would like to receive a gift of 1 kg of dollar bills.
(c)the density of paper is 950 kg/m3
so mass = 950 kg in 1 cubic meter
so 1 cubic meter of $100 bills of paper = 950 *$100000
= $95000000
1 cubic meter of gold of mass is = 19300 kg
the cost of gold in 1 cubic meter = 19300 * 37000
= $ 714100000
I would like to receive a gift of 1 cubic meter of gold
