Question

What must B. Another positively charged sphere, sphere 2, is placed near the grounded sphere as shown below. 1. The instant that sphere 2 is placed, before any charges have moved, what is the direction of the net electric field at point A? Explain. 2. After the system has reached static equilibrium, is the net charge on sphere i positive, negative, or zero? 3. Two students discuss their answers to question 2 above. Student 1 When conductors are grounded they lose their charge. Sphere 1 is grounded both before and after sphere 2 is added, so sphere 1 remains neutral." Student 2: I disagree. In equilibrium the net field at point A is zero. The field at A due to sphere 2 is to the right, so sphere 1 must be negatively charged to create a field in the opposite direction." With which student, ifeither, do you agree? Explain. CTutorials in Introductory Physics, Physics Education Group,Department of Physics University of Washington (Winter 2016)

Explanation / Answer

part 1 toward right because initialy there is no charge on 1 because it is already grounded

part2

it will be negaitive becuase to neutrilize the electric field negetive charge induct from earth

3

ans

student 2

because if any object grounded with earth it normlize the charge. earth is capable of absorbing or releasing electron from his surface. eart can sore infinte charge

so after we placed 2 charge. positive charge start inducing in it but earth start normalize all the charge and there will be a eqqual and opposite charge will come to neutrise the field at A
