Question
Select the answers which complete the statements below (e.g., if answer A completes the first statement, and answer B the others, enter ABBBB). A) positive B) negative C) neutral D) cannot tell A positively charged glass rod repels an object suspended by a non-conducting thread. The charge on the object is ____ . Two neutral metal spheres are mounted on insulating supports. They are connected by a wire, and a second wire connects them to ground. A positively charged glass rod is brought near sphere 1. The ground wire is removed and the rod is taken away. Then the wire connecting the spheres is taken away. The charge on sphere 1 is now ____ . A positively charged ball is brought close to a neutral isolated conductor. The conductor is then grounded, while the ball is kept close. If the ground connection is first removed and then the ball is taken away, the conductor has a ____ charge. Two neutral metal spheres are mounted on insulating supports. They are connected by a wire. A positively charged glass rod is brought near sphere 1. The wire connecting the spheres is removed and the charged rod is then taken away. Now the charge on sphere 1 is ____ . A positively charged glass rod attracts an object suspended by a non-conducting thread. The charge on the object is ____ .
Explanation / Answer
A positively charged glass rod repels an object suspended by a non-conducting thread. The charge on the object is Positive . Two neutral metal spheres are mounted on insulating supports. They are connected by a wire, and a second wire connects them to ground. A positively charged glass rod is brought near sphere 1. The ground wire is removed and the rod is taken away. Then the wire connecting the spheres is taken away. The charge on sphere 1 is now __Neutral__ . A positively charged ball is brought close to a neutral isolated conductor. The conductor is then grounded, while the ball is kept close. If the ground connection is first removed and then the ball is taken away, the conductor has a __Neagtive__ charge. Two neutral metal spheres are mounted on insulating supports. They are connected by a wire. A positively charged glass rod is brought near sphere 1. The wire connecting the spheres is removed and the charged rod is then taken away. Now the charge on sphere 1 is _Positive__ . A positively charged glass rod attracts an object suspended by a non-conducting thread. The charge on the object is ___Positive_ .
Explanation:-
i) Electrons will flow out of sphere 2, into sphere 1 as they are attracted to the positively charged rod. When the wire is removed Sphere 1 will be Negative and Sphere 2 will be Positive.
ii) The positively charged ball will cause the neutral conductor to want to become negatively charged. Electrons will flow from the ground, into conductor causing it to become Negative.
iii) The positively charged rod will cause electrons to flow out of the ground and sphere 2 into sphere 1. Since sphere 2 is also grounded electrons will flow into sphere 2 making it negative. When the ground wire and rod is taken away sphere 1 will be more negative than sphere 2, causing electrons to flow from sphere 1 to sphere 2, until equilibrium is met. When the wire connected the spheres is taken away both spheres will be Neutral.
