Question

A deuteron particle (the nucleus of an isotope of hydrogen consisting of one proton and one neutron and having a mass of 3.34×1027 kg ) moving horizontally enters a uniform, vertical, 0.520 T magnetic field and follows a circular arc of radius 58.0 cm .

Part A

How fast was this deuteron moving just before it entered the magnetic field ?

Part B

How fast was this deuteron moving just after it came out of the field?

Part C

What would be the radius of the arc followed by a proton that entered the field with the same velocity as the deuteron?

R=  cm

v1= m/s

Explanation / Answer

m = 3.34*10^-27 kg , B = 0.52 T, r = 58 cm

deuteron charge q = 1.6*10^-19 C

Part A: centripetal force = magnetic force

mv^2/r = qvB

3.34*10^-27*v/0.58 = 1.6*10^-19*0.52

v1 = 1.44*10^7 m/s

Part B: V2 = 1.44*10^7 m/s

Part C:

proton mass m = 1.67*10^-27kg

mv^2/R = qvB

1.67*10^-27*1.44*10^7/R = 1.6*10^-19*0.52

R = 28.9 cm
