Question

For each of the questions below, what is the flux: positive, negative or zero? (a) A bar magnet is enclosed by a spherical surface. What is the flux through the entire surface? (b) If the magnetic flux through the hemisphere closest to the magnet's north pole is positive, what is the flux through the hemisphere closest to the magnet's south pole? (c) The magnet is now moved so that its north half is outside the-surface. What is the flux through the entire surface now? (d) The portion of the magnet outside the surface is sawed off. What is the flux through the entire surface now?

Explanation / Answer

(a) Here incoming flux will be equal to outgoing flux so net flux will be zero

(b) If close to the north pole flux is positive then close to the south pole it will be negative

(c) as total flux is incomin so net flux is negative

(d) now again south and north pole will become inside the surface so net flux is zero
