Question

Your task in physics lab is to make a microscope from two lenses. One lens has a focal length of 12 cm , the other a focal length of 4.0 cm . You plan to use the more powerful lens as the objective, and you want its image to be 16 cm from the lens, as in a standard biological microscope.

b.What will be the magnification of your microscope?

Your task in physics lab is to make a microscope from two lenses. One lens has a focal length of 12 cm, the other a focal length of 4.0 cm. You plan to use the more powerful lens as the objective, and you want its image to be 16 cm from the lens, as in a standard biological microscope Part A How far should the objective lens be from the object to produce a real image 16 cm from the objective? Express your answer using two significant figures. d 5.3 cm. Submit My Answers Give Up Correct Part B What will be the magnification of your microscope? Express your answer using two significant figures.

Explanation / Answer

a)for your microscope, forcal length of objective fo = 4 cm and focal length of eyepeiec is fe = 12 cm.
now, for the objective if 'u' is the object distance,from Gausiian formula
1/fo = 1/u + 1/v , so that, 1/4 = 1/u + 1/16 , solving which u= 5.333 cm

b) now, regarding magnification, at near point( though you didn't mention it)
M = v / u ( 1 + D / fe) , where D = 25 cm ( distance of distinct vision)
= 16 / 5.333 ( 1 + 25 / 12 ) = 9.2505 (nearly)
