Question

Exercise 8.40 flying at 90 m/s The falcon hit the raven at nght angles to its original path and bounced back at 50 m/s (These figures were estimated by the author as he watched this attack occur in northem New Mexico) By what angle did the falcon c hange the ravens dnection of motion? Express your answer significant figures. 44 Incorrect Try Again: 3 attempts remaining Part B Whatwas the ravens speed right after the collision? Express your answer using two significant figures. Explanation / Answer

Here, the velocity of raven in its original direction doesnt change
but in the direction 90 degrees to its motion,

So, we apply conservation of momentum
mu1 + M u2 = Mv2 + mv1

given that -
but u2 = 0 , u1 = 19 m/s, v1 = - 5.0 m/s

So, from the above expression -

0.650*19 + 0 = 1.60*v2 + 0.650*(-5.0)

=> v2 = (12.35 + 3.25) / 1.6 =
hence v2 = 9.75 m/sec

So, answer of Part B is 9.75 m/s.

Again, its velocity in its original direction didnt change that is 9.0 m/sec

Hence, tan theta = 9.75/9.0

=> theta = tan^-1 (1.08) = 47.3 deg.
Hence, falcon change raven's direction of motion by 47.3 deg. from its original direction.
