Question
Your lab experiments showed that -rays ( is the greek letter gamma) are stopped by a dense material such as lead. The Sun's inner core is on average 10 times denser than lead (though not composed of lead) and the absorbed gamma rays are re-emitted. (Note that the Sun's diameter is 1.4 x 10^6 km).
(b)The Sun's inner core extends from the center out to about 25% of its full radius. About how many times will a -ray be absorbed and re-emitted before it reaches the edge of the core if it travels in a straight line?
Explanation / Answer
The Sun's radius is r = D/2 = 1.4 x 10^6km /2 = 0.7 x 10^6 km
Full core of the Sun absorbs 10 times gammaw ray and emitts 10 times.
When the radius increases by 25% that is new radius is 0.7 x 10^6 km + 0.28 x10^6 km
so new radius r| = 0.98 x 10^6km
so number of gammaw ray absorbition and emission = (10/0.7x10^6 ) (0.98x10^6) = 14
hence, when the inner core expands from the centre out to 25% of its radius then it absorbs and re-emits 14 types of gammaw rays.
