Question

refer to diagram . there is a sequence of 10 events here ,including the deposition of units a-f and y, folding of units a through f, fault movement along the fault, and intrusion of the pluton. ignore the stratigraphic horizon that lies beneath "a" and note that pluton refers to a body of granite in this example . put a number from 1 (oldest) to 10 (youngest) for each of the following :
folding of layers a through f
deposition of a
deposition of b
deposition of c
deposition of d
deposition of e
deposition of f
deposition of y
movement along fault
intrusion of pluton

Explanation / Answer

The figure shows a geological section with different rocks of different ages and depositions.

Use the concept of law of horizontality, law of superposition, and law of cross cutting to identify the rock beds.

From the figure, initially “a” is the basement of the geologic section deposited at the bottom. In the geologic section, a plutonic rock occurred and caused intrusion. Due this intrusion the sedimentary layers effected by plutonic and formed folds and faults.

From the law of horizontality the ages of the rock layers increase from the top to the bottom. Thus, the sequence of ages as a, b, c, d, e, and f. In those “a” is the oldest than all and “f” is youngest than all.

The plutonic intrusion occurred suddenly in between those sedimentary layers. Thus, it is youngest than “f”.

Hence, the sequence of the ages of the rocks from youngest to the oldest is a, b, c, d, e, f, and y.
