Question

Referring to Figure 23.57(b), what is the direction of the current induced in the coil: (a) If the current in the wire increases? (b) If the current in the wire decreases? (c) If the current in the wire suddenly becomes zero? Explicitly show how you follow the steps in the Problem-Solving Strategy for Lenz's Law. Explain your answer and draw the induced magnetic field as well as the induced current in the coil due to the long straight current carrying wire, (a) (CCW;CW;CW](b) (CW; CCW;CCW] (c) no induced current

Explanation / Answer

(a) Magnetic field due to the upward current at the right side of the wire is into the page.

Whe current increase, flux also increases and hence the induced current will flow in such a way to opoose the increase in current which will be counterclockwise. This is because for counterclockwise current, induced magnetic field will be coming out the page and hence flucx will decrease

(b) Whe current decrease, flux also decreases and hence the induced current will flow in such a way to opoose the decrease in current which will be clockwise. This is because for clockwise current, induced magnetic field will be into the page and hence flucx will increase

(c) When current become suddenly zero which means it will decrease which is almost the same case as (b) hence current will be clockwise
