Question

Lot each square be of length 10 cm. Suppose we consider a system of two converging lens of focal length f_1 = 75 cm and f_2 = 10 cm separated by 10 cm. For an object placed 30 cm in front of the first converging lens, locate and characterize (bigger or smaller, inverted or upright, real or virtual, and the final magnification) the final image by using the simple lens equation. Using the figure in problem 1 for this optical system, locate the image and determine its charateristics by using raytracing. Please draw the parallel, focal and chief rays for this optical system.

Explanation / Answer

by lens equation

1 / f = 1 / u + 1 / v

for first lens

1 / 75 = 1 / 30 + 1 / v

v = -50 cm

this image will act as object for second lens so,

1 / 10 = 1 / (50 + 10) + 1 / v

v = 12 cm

since the v is positive the image will be real

magnification = -distance of image / distance of object

for first lens

magnification = -(-50) / 30

magnification = height of image / height of object

-(-50) / 30 = height of image / height of object

height of image = 1.67 * height of object

for second lens

-12 / 60 = height of image / (1.67 * height of object)

height of image = -0.334 * height of object

since the magnification is nagative the image will be inverted

height of image will be smaller than the object

final magnification = -0.334
