Question

A proton, moving with a velocity of v_i, collides elastically with another proton that is initially at rest. Assuming that after the collision the speed of the in moving proton is 2.30 times the speed of the initially at rest, find the following. (a) the speed of each proton after the collision in terms of v_i (b) the direction of the velocity vectors after the collision (assume that the initially moving proton scatters toward the positive y direction) so you want the initially moving proton and the initially at rest proton relative to the positive z-axis.

Explanation / Answer

a) from conservation of energy

1/2mvi^2 = 1/2m(2.3v)^2+1/2mv^2

6.29(1/2mv^2) = 1/2mvi^2

v = 0.398 vi

the spped of the projectile proton is 0.92vi

b) from conservation of momentum

along y axis

0 = mvf1y+mvf2y

vf1y= -vf2y

along x aixs

mvi = 2.3mvfx+mvfx = 3.3mvfx

vfx = 0.303 vi
