Question

Use Lenz's law to answer the following question concerning the direction of induced currents. We introduce the following notations: A) The direction of the induced magnetic field within the solenoid is A1: to the left A2: to the right A3: upward A4: downward A5: into the paper B) The direction of the induced current through the resistor R is B1: from a through R to b B2: from b through R to a What is correct when the bar magnet is moved to the left? 1. A3, B1 2. A2, B2 3. A3, B2 4. A1, B2 5. A5, B2 6. A2, B1 7. A5, B1 8. A1, B1

Explanation / Answer

According to Lenz law, The induced current in the solenoid will opposes the applied magnetic. i.e it lust acts towards left (A1).
By using right hand thumb rule, to oppose the applied magnetic field, the current in the solenoid must be directed in clockwise direction. i.e the current will pass through R, from b to a (B2)
Answer: 4. A1-B2
