Question
Three polarizing plates whose planes are parallel are centered on a common axis. The directions of the transmission axes relative to the common vertical direction are shown in the figure below. A linearly polarized beam of light with the plane of polarization parallel to the vertical reference direction is incident from the left on the first disk with intensity I_i = 14.5 units (arbitrary). Calculate the transmitted intensity, I_f, when theta_1 = 20.8 degree. Do not enter units. Calculate the transmitted intensity, I_f, when theta_2 = 41.2 degree. Do not enter units. Calculate the transmitted intensity, I_f, when thete_3 = 59.6 degree. Do not enter units. Is there something different we are supposed to be doing for the third plate? I am inputting the calculation the same way, yet I am not getting the correct answer. You use the final intensity of the second problem and multiply cos^2(theta3-theta2)Explanation / Answer
I = Io (cos(theta))^2
when theta1 = 20.8 deg
If= 14.5 (cos20.8)^2 = 12.67
When theta2 = 41.2 deg
then If = 12.67 (cos(41.2 - 20.8))^2 = 11.13
when theta3 = 59.6 deg
If = 11.13 (cos(59.6 - 41.2))^2 = 10.02
