Question

Consider the figure below of the applied force F:

Answer parts a, b, c, d, e, f and g below. Show all work. Include all physics related explanation and detail.

a) With Newton's second law of motion, set up the equations of motion for each block, m1 = 5 kg, m2 = 2 kg, and m3 = 10 kg.

b) From the equations from (a) and Newton's third law of motion, calculate the acceleration of those blocks.

c) Find force, F12(from block 1 onto block 2).

d) Find force F23(from block 2 onto block 3).

e) What is the net force, Fnet 1, on the block m1?

f) What is the net force, Fnet 2, on the block m2?

g) What is the net force, Fnet 3, on the block m3?

10 kg 5kg 2kg 3 2 g-F, 1

Explanation / Answer

Let R be the contact force on m2 and R be the contact force on m3. we can write suing Newton's second law:

(a)for m1, F - R' = m1a

for m2, R' - R = m2a

for m3, R = m3a

b)Adding the above three equations we get

F - R' + R' - R + R = m1a + m2a + m3a

F = a(m1 + m2 + m3)

a = F/(m1 + m2 + m3)

a = F/(5 + 2 + 10) = F/17

c)F1->2 = m2a = m2 x F/(m1 + m2 + m3)

F1->2 = 2 x F/17 = 2/17 F

d)F2->3 = m3a = m3 x F/(m1 + m2 + m3)

F2->3 = 3/17 F
