Question

Which resistors are in series, and which ones are in parallel? Find the effective resistance of the circuit drawn above. Find the voltage drop over each resistor, as well as the current flowing through each. What happens if you keep adding infinitely many 1 Ohm resistors in parallel to the two already connected in parallel? What will the circuit's effective resistance be now? What are the voltage drop over and the current through each of these 1 Ohm resistors? What happens if you keep adding infinitely many 1 Ohm resistors in series to the circuit? What will the circuit's effective resistance be now? What are the voltage drop over and the current through each of these 1 Ohm resistors?

Explanation / Answer

1)

2 ohms 3 ohms are in parallel and this combination is in series with 5 ohms.

2)

Req = 5 + 2*3/(2+3)

= 6.2 ohms

3)

current through battery, I = V/req

= 6/6.2

= 0.9677 A

voltage drop across 5 ohms = 5*0.9677

= 4.838 volts

voltage across 2 and 3ohms = 6 - 4.838

= 1.162 V

4) the resistance of the parallel combination approximately zero.

Req = 5 ohms

voltage drop across all 1 ohms = 0

current through each 1 ohm resistor = 0

5) Req = infinite

current through each 1 ohm resistor = 0

voltage drop across each 1 ohm resisotr = zero
