Question

Shown is a small solenoid with five loops (1) and a larger solenoid (2) each connected to a battery. A constant current has been generated in each one. Note the orientation of the battery in each solenoid and the direction of the current around the coils of each solenoid.
a) If both coils are stationary:
- Is there an induced current through solenoid 1? If yes, indicate the direction of the induced current. Explain your reasoning
- Is solenoid 1 attracted to or repelled by 2, or is there no force at all between them? Explain your reasoning.
b) If solenoid 1 is moving toward solenoid 2:
- Is there an induced current through solenoid 1? if yes, indicate the direction of the induced current. Explain your resoning.
- Is any force by solenoid 2 on solenoid 1 larger, smaller or the same as in part (a)? Explain your resoning.

CA

Explanation / Answer

A) Iinduced in coil 1 = 0

because of B = constant and A = constant , flux change = 0, therefore induced emf =0.

both solenoid are repal each other since emf's are connected in opposite and then the currents also opposite currents in both solenoids.

B) yes,

Since flux through solenoid 1 is increases , induced emf is generated and induced current in the solenoid 1 is in the direction of original current (from lenz law)

larger

because in solenoid 1, net current Inet = Iinduced + Ioriginal so that field produced by solenoid 1 increaes and also force increses

because the repulsive force magnitude is same on each solenoid
