Question
A large tank of water is h = 0.8 meters tall. It has a small puncture at a height y = 0.6 meters above its base, which sits directly on flat ground. Water is replenished as it runs out, to keep h constant.
a. Find the speed with which the water leaves the hole.
b. Find the distance the water will travel horizontally before hitting the ground. (The water follows normal projectile motion after leaving the hole.)
c. Could the hole be placed at a different height to get the water to travel a longer range?
Explanation / Answer
a) speed of the water,
mgh = 0.5*m*v^2
v = sqrt(2gh)
v = sqrt(2*9.8*0.8)
v = 3.95 m/s
------------------------------
b) since no vertical velocity initially
u = 0
S = ut + 0.5*g*t^2
0.6 = 0 + 0.5*9.8*t^2
t = 0.35 sec
--------------------------
horizontal distance covered = 3.94*0.35 = 1.38 m
