General Information Line: 213-473-0800 http://www.griffithobs.org Visit the Foucault pendulum exhibit. Explain why the -pegs" are knocked down even ten minutes or so. When did Galileo first spot Jupiter's moons? What did Galileo note specifically on the fourteenth day of January 1610 regarding his observations of Jupiter's moons? "If you see an object at 20X through a telescope, it is enlarged at ______ times and "if you sec an object at 20X through a telescope, it is enlarged at _____times and appears to be________closer to you.Explanation / Answer
1) Foucault's pendulum, named after the French physicist Léon Foucault, is a simple device conceived as an experiment to demonstrate the rotation of the Earth. While it had long been known that the Earth rotates,
As the pendulum swings, it moves clockwise with the Earth’s rotation, knocking over one peg approximately every 15 minutes. Although the pendulum appears to be traveling around the circle, it’s actually the earth that moves, making this exhibit a perfect visualization of the earth’s rotation.
(Foucault himself said it a little less simply, like this: T = 24/sin q where T equals the amount of time to make one complete revolution and q is the latitude of the pendulum.)
2)Galileo began seriously observing the planet in 1609. This discovery of Jupiter’s moons occurred on January 7, 1610.
On January 10, 1610 Galileo discovered another one of Jupiter’s moons
3)Galileo is able to see all four moons for the first time.
