Question

A laser with wavelength 56.25 mu m is shining light on a double slit with slit separation 0.450 mm. This results in an interference pattern on a screen a distance L away from the slits. We wish to shine a second laser, with a different wavelength, through the same slits such that the fourth minimum of the first laser is at the same location as the second maximum of the second laser. What is the value of m in the equation d sin theta = m lambda for the second maximum? Also, what is the value of m in the equation d sin theta = (m + 1/2) lambda for the fourth minimum? Enter your two values separated by a comma (maximum, minimum).

Explanation / Answer

for maxima, m takes values of integers from 1 onwards .

so for second maximum , value of m will be 2.

for minima, m takes integer value from 0 onwards

so for fourth minimum, value of m will be 4-1=3

so m_max=2

m_min=3
