Question
The following questions refer to the circuit represented by the diagram below. a) Immediately after the switch is closed, find the magnitude and direction of the conventional current (if any) through the battery, and find the potential difference across the inductor. b) A long time after the switch is closed, find the magnitude and direction of the conventional current (if any) through the battery, and find the potential difference across the inductor. c) After the switch has been closed for a long time it is suddenly opened. Immediately after the switch is opened, find the magnitude and direction of the conventional current (if any) through the resistor R_1 and the potential difference across the inductor.Explanation / Answer
a)
immediately after switch is closed inductor will act as open circuit,therefore current througj battery is
I=E/R1=200/50=4 A
Potential difference across inductor is
VL=200 V
b)
after long time switch is closed inductor will act as short circuit ,so equivalent resistance
Req=50*50/(50+50)=25 ohms
current through battery
I=E/Req=200/25=8 A
Voltage across inductor is
VL=0
c)when switch suddenly opened ,inductor does not allow sudden change in current ,therefore
I=8 A
Voltage across inductor
VL=-200 Volts
