Explanation / Answer

a) Earth's magnetic field H = 50 x 10-6 T

distance r = 11cm = 11 x 10-2 m

magnetic field at a distance r from the current carrying wire B = u0 i / 2 pi r

Net field B - H = 0

hence B = u0 i / 2 pi r = H

current i = H x 2 pi r/ u0  = H x 2 pi r/ ( 4 pi x 10-7 )

= 50 x 10-6 x11 x 10-2 / 2 x 10-7

= 27.5 A

b) To get null magnetic field at 11 cm current should flow in east direction

i.e angle is 900
