Question

Number of pennies required to sink cup. Calculation of number of pennies: Measure the mass of the styrofoam cup again using the triple beam balance. Measure the mass of the Cool Whip container, dry. To determine the mass of the water displaced by the styrofoam cup: Place the 1000 ml beaker in the CoolWhip container, and fill it (the beaker) completely with water, taking care not to spill any water into the CoolWhip container itself. Now gently and slowly pushy the styrofoam cup, open side up, into the 100 ml beaker until from the beaker overflows into the cup, and stops overflowing into the CoolWhip container. Remove the 1000 ml beaker from the CoolWhip container and measure the mass of the CoolWhip with the water in it. Calculate the mass of the overflow water, which is the mass of the water (m_water) displaced by the cup when it is on the verge of sinking. Calculate the mass of the required pennies (m_pennies), using Eq.2 Measure the mass of 50 pennies Calculate the mass of a single penny (m_penny) Using Eq. 3, calculate n, the expected number of pennies. Experimental check of calculation. Fill the 100 ml beaker about 3/4 full of water. Add about half number of pennies calculated in 2h to the dry interior of the styrofoam cup, and place it in the boiler. Slowly and carefully add additional pennies until the cup sinks, noting the number of pennies beyond the point where the water level becomes even with the top of the cup. Retrieve the sunken cup and count the number of pennies it contains. (This is n_measured) Calculate the % difference between n_measured and n_calculated What is it that allows the top of the cup to actually sink below the surface of the water before the water actually pours into the cup. What could you do to minimize this effect?

Explanation / Answer

(1) IF THE META CENTER OF CUP ACTING BELOW THE C.G. OF THE CUP THEN THE TOP OF THE CUP SINKS BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE WATER.

(2) IF WE WANT TO MINIMIZE THIS EFFECT THEN WE HAVE TO GIVE SOME WEIGHT TO THE BOTTOM OF THE CUP IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE META CENTER OF THE CUP ACTING SIGNIFICANTLY ABOVE THE C.G OF THE CUP.
