sorry wont let me to rotate
In a neotropical bee (a hymenopteran), there is a genetic polymorphism for eusociality versus solitary breeding. In eusocial groups, female workers remain inside their home colony and raise fall sisters (r = 0.75). Solitary queens raise their own offspring (r = 0.5) without the help of sterile workers. In one habitat, parasitoid wasps are common (lay their eggs inside bee larvae and kill the bee larvae) and there is a high risk of parasitism of bee larvae by these wasps, female workers increase the average number of sisters produced in the colony by 30 individuals, whereas solitary breeders produce an average of 5 offspring in this environment? In another habitat where there are no parasitoid wasps, helpers increase the average number of sisters produced in the colony by 10 individuals, whereas solitary breeders produce an average of 25 offspring? Determine whether cooperative or solitary breeding will be favored in each habitat by using Hamilton's rule (Br > C) in each habitat. How are eusociality and larval predation linked to each other?Explanation / Answer
Hamilton rule is a theorem used to determine the social behaviour of animals or insects under a specific condition of relatedness, benefit and cost. According to Hamilton's inclusive fitness theory, the genes in an insect have the tendency to select a condition or habitat in which they can maximize their inclusive fitness. In eusocial habitate the female members take care of the larvae but in solitary breeding its only the queen who can take care of the larvae, other drones and members of the bee family go out in search of food. There is possibility of wasp destroying the larvae in solitary breeding than in eusocial habitat. Therefore applying the rule of kin selection to the bees cooperative breeding would be more preferred by the bees than solitary breeding where there are parasite wasp.
Eusociality in bees is related to predation in the way that there are some drone or male workers who are born as workers, who after a span of time act in an selfsacrificing way by filling their abdomen with liquid food and hanging themselves from the mouth of the hive on which the larvae and queen bee can feed having no need to go out of the home.
