Question
Hi, could you please explain in detail the thought process behind the solution for part B below? i.e. what exactly does it mean by the complete wavelength range is present, and why is 90 used for theta, etc. Thanks!
52 GO A beam of light consisting of wavelengths from 460.0 mm to 640.0 nm is directed perpendicularly onto a diffraction grating with 160 lines/mm. (a) What is the lowest order that is overlapped by another order? (b) What is the highest order for which the complete wavelength range of the beam is present? In that highest order, at what angle does the light at wavelength (c 460.0 nm and (d) 640.0 mm appear? (e) What is the greatest angle at which the light at wavelength 460.0 mm appears?Explanation / Answer
since light is directed perpendicularly onto a diffraction gration so the angle made by light with diffraction grating is 90 degree.
In this case, we obtain m =9.8 which means that the largest order in which the full range (which must include that
largest wavelength) is seen is ninth order.
complete wavelength range means the m value is even number. since 9.8 is not even number, the range of wave is 1 to 9 so largest wavelngth can be seed when m = 9
