Question
In the beginning of the session we talked about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Below is the model that suggests human's need to fulfill each basic need before mustering up the motivation to reach the next level. Here's another look at the Model:
For this Gradable discussion worth 1 point, what do you think of Maslow's Model? Is he missing anything that you might find to be essential needs (examples could be spirituality and sense of humor.)
Self-actualization (achieving individua otential) Esteem (achievement, confidence, position in a group, status Belonging (love, affection, family, friendship, sexual intimacv) Safety Needs (security of body, employment, health, property) Physiological Needs (food, sleep, sex, shelter)Explanation / Answer
Maslow's hierarchy is a famous model for human needs, it starts with the basic physiological needs (food, shelter) , fulling which an individual needs safty through emplyment or health or property, if they have that then they want to achieve love , affection, family and finally want to get esteem with mastery in individual potential. This model couldbe applicable to different disciplines like education, parenting, markeing management, business etc. But I feel there are things which are missing from the model:
1) Looking at today's business model, if you look at a start-up or a stable business everything is dependent on connectivity i.e social connection. This criteria has not been palced anywhere in the model. Each person in today's world has a linkedin, twitter or facebook account , it has become an essential need. For any kind of business to run successfully you need people and connection with others. Social activity is required in each step of the hierarchy.
2) Looking at this model I feel like each level will come in a step by step process, but life is not a dream, you might think of getting your individual potential after you achive your safty needs. These things might not be as easy as it is shown in the model, there are co-founding variables in each levels.
3) Maslow's concept is a one way model, there might be situation where a person wants to come back to the esteem even after getting self-actualization.
4) Thigs like spirituality or sense of humor or sixth sense are beyond the needs of human behavior. Spiritual need of an individual might come at any stage, one can not put this in any model or step by step process.
Oveall Maslow's model is a good fit for most of the discipline, but there are exceptional situation where it might not fit the best way it can.
