Question

Need some help: Doing a lab and need help with calculations, not seeming to do it right.

(1)My initial temperature for the water is 24C and initial volume of water is 70mL. Final volume of water is 74mL and final temperature is 17C.

To fill in the amounts in the table, I need to know (1)the change in ice temp, (2)heat lost by water, (3)heat gained by ice after melting, (4)heat used to melt ice, and (5) the theoretical heat to melt ice. Please show how you got the answers, i need to know how to do this correctly, which I have not been doing.

(2)I also need to know the initial mass of the water and the initial mass of the ice cube. Please show how you got the answer.

Explanation / Answer

as final temperature is 17 C, all ice has melted.

addition of volume=4 mL

so mass of ice=volume*density=4 mL*1 grams/mL=4 grams.=0.004 kg

mass of water=volume*density=70 mL*1 grams/mL=70 grams=0.07 kg

let initial temperature of ice was -T degree celcius.

then heat lost by water=heat required to heat ice from -T degree to 0 degree + heat required to melt ice at 0 degree + heat required to increase temperature of melted water from 0 degree to 17 C

==>mass of water*specific heat of water*temperature change=mass of ice*specific heat of ice*temperature change+mass of ice*latent heat of fusion of ice+mass of melted ice*specific heat of water*change in temperature

==>0.07*4186*(24-17)=0.004*2108*(0-(-T))+0.004*334000+0.004*4186*(17-0)

==>0.004*2108*T=0.07*4186*(24-17)-(0.004*334000+0.004*4186*(17-0))

==>T=51.055

hence initial temperature of ice was -51.055 degree celcius

temperature change of ice=17-(-51.055)=68.055 degree celcius

heat lost by water=0.07*4186*(24-17)=2051.1 J

heat gained by ice after melting=0.004*4186*(17-0))=284.65 J

heat used to melt ice=0.004*334000=1336 J

theoretical heat to melt ice=1336 J

data used:

specific heat of water=4186 J/(kg.K)

specific heat of ice=2108 J/(kg.K)

latent heat of fusion of ice=334000 J/kg.
