Question

(FOR REFERENCE)

8. Multiple Choice select the best answer. Consider the same scenario as in the previous problem. Each rock starts from the same height, and each has the same initial speed. This time including the effects of air resistance (a non-conservative force), which of the rocks will have the greatest kinetic energy just before hitting the ground? a. Rock A. b. Rock B. c. Rock C d. Rocks A and C both have the same kinetic energy, and it is higher than the kinetic energy of B. e. All three rocks have the same kinetic energy just before hitting the ground

Explanation / Answer

Rock C will have the highest kinetic energy just before hitting the ground. This is because the distance it travels while in air is the least and hence the loss of energy in Rock C due to air resistance will be the lowest(this is because the energy loss due to air resistance,a non-conservative force, is a path function and hence a function of distance travelled in air). Higher the distance travelled in air, more the loss of energy.Hence the kinetic energy of Rock C will be highest and that of Rock A will be the least.
