Explanation / Answer

To understand this, we need to undesyand the concepts of Alpha and Beta decay.

Alpha Decay: In alpha decay, the atom splits to produce an Helium atom and the daughter atom. Since the paret atom lost an Helium atom, the mass of it gets reduced by 4 (2 protons + 2 neutrons). And the atomtic number gets reduced by 2 because of the loss of two protons.

In the very first image, U238 undergoes alpha decay which means that the resultant daughter atom will be lighter by 4 units. hence the 238-4 = 234 mol wt.

The vertical Axis "Z" means the mass number in this case, while the horizontal axis "N" is the the number of Neutrons.

So the daughter produced will have mol wt of 234 which is option D. Th234.

In the second image, a beta decay is taking place. In Beta negative decay, a neutron splits into a proton and an electron is released. In this process, the mass number remains the same but the no. of neutrons reduces by one.

Hence for the second image, the mass 234 remians same but the N value reduced by 1.
