Question

A current loop sits in the x y plane, centered on the origin. At the origin, the magnetic field due to the loop points in the positive z direction. What direction does the current in the loop run when viewed from the positive z direction?

Counter-clockwise.

a)Clockwise.

b)The current is zero.

c)More information is needed.

Two long conducting wires sit parallel to one another. The magnetic field at a point exactly half way between the two wires is measured to be zero. Which of the following statements could be true? (Choose all that could be true)

a)The current through one wire is zero, but not both.

b)The current through both wires is zero.

c)The same current runs through both wires in the same direction.

d)The same current runs through both wires in opposite directions.

Two long conducting wires set parallel to one another. The magnetic field at a point exactly one-quarter of the way between the two wires is measured to be non-zero. Which of the following statements could be true? (Choose all that could be true)

a)The current through one wire is zero, but not both.

b)The current through both wires is zero.

c)The same current runs through both wires in the same direction.

d)The same current runs through both wires in opposite directions.

Explanation / Answer

1.

As viewed from the positive Z-axis, Using right hand curl rule , the direction of current comes out to be counterclockwise.

2.

d)The same current runs through both wires in same directions.

For the two wires carrying current, the magnetic field is zero at the point halfway between them when the direction of current is same in the two wire. Due to same direction of current , each wire produce magnetic field opposite to the other wire. Since the distance of midpoint is same for each wire and also the magnitude of current is same in both wires, the magnetic field produced by each wire is same in magnitude and opposite in direction, hence the two magnetic fields cancel out and we get zero magnetic field at the halfway point.

3.

a)The current through one wire is zero, but not both.

at the point mentioned , the magnetic field is non-zero. so the magnetic field can be produced by any of the two wire.

c)The same current runs through both wires in the same direction.

d)The same current runs through both wires in opposite directions.
