Question
A helicopter is flying in a straight line over a level field at a constant speed of 7.2 m/s and at a constant altitude of 8.7 m. A package is ejected horizontally from the helicopter with an initial velocity of 15.0 m/s relative to the helicopter, and in a direction opposite the helicopter's motion. Find the initial velocity of the package relative to the ground. (b) What is the horizontal distance between the helicopter and the package at the instant the package strikes the ground? (c) What angle does the velocity vector of the package make with the ground at the instant before impact, as seen from the ground?
Explanation / Answer
The packages initial veocity relative to the ground = 15-7 .2= 7.8m/s
Time taken to hit the ground
v^2 = u^2 + 2as
v^2 = 0 + 2 x 9.8 x 8.7
v = 13.05m/s
v = u+at
13.05 = 0+ 9.8t
t = 1.3s
horizontal distance travelled by package = 7.8 x 1.3 = 10.14m
horizontal disctance travelled by helicopter = 7.2 x 1.3 = 9.36m
Distance between helicopter and package + 10.14+9.36 = 19.5m
Tan A = 13.05/7.8
A = 59.13 deg
